Product Description
Product Description

Joining of fire rated cables should be avoided if the fire rating is to be maintained as there is currently no commercially available fire rated cable joint that meets the same fire rating test as the cable (AS/NZS 3013). It is however acceptable to join a fire rated cable only if the joint is made outside of the area where the fire rating is required.
Enclosing fire cables in either plastic or metal conduit or trunking should be avoided as it will change the cable performance during a fire such that it may no longer operate and maintain circuit integrity for the time intended. The mechanism of combustion of the materials used in fire rated cables is complex and can change if surrounded by other plastics or metals, therefore this practice should be avoided.
To ensure the circuit integrity of a fire rated cable system is maintained the cable/s must be supported on suitable metallic cable tray and fastened with non-flammable materials such as steel ties, clips or similar. The use of plastic ties, ropes are to be avoided. Furthermore fasteners for the cable support system must be manufactured from steel, ie steel bolts, screws etc. Aluminium and/or plastic fasteners are to be avoided. (This is the reason that fire rated cables are only manufactured with copper conductors, as the melting point of copper is 1085 oC, which is above the test temperature of AS/NZS 3013 (1030 oC). Aluminium has a melting point of only 660 oC)
If fire rated cables are installed in the same cable tray with other non-fire rated cables, bunching of the cables and their proximity to other cables will impact on their ability to maintain circuit integrity under fire. Fire rated cable must be installed on separate cable trays and bunching is to be avoided.
If fire rated cables are installed in the same cable tray with other non-fire rated cables, but circuit integrity is not a requirement, while the low smoke and toxic combustion properties of the system are to be maintained, the other cables must also be of a type which have similar low smoke and non-toxic materials. Cables with PVC insulation and/or PVC sheath DO NOT fall into this category.
