Product Introduction
The industrial use of air separation plants for producing pure oxygen, nitrogen, argon, helium, and other noble gases is established well. The main products of air separation plants are oxygen, nitrogen, and argon in liquid or gaseous state. Air separation processes are classified as cryogenic and noncryogenic air separation units, which mainly differ regarding the production capacity and the purity of the products. Cryogenic air separation oxygen plant are used to gain large amounts of products with high purity. Modern air separation plants produce up to 6000 t/d of oxygen and 10,000 t/d of nitrogen. In multi-train air separation plants, production rates of up to 30,000 t/d oxygen are possible. In the noncryogenic air separation processes, adsorption, chemical, polymeric membranes, and ion transport membranes are used. However, these processes produce only small amounts of products.
The applications of pure oxygen are wide. Approximately 55% of the produced oxygen is used in the metallurgical industry and 25% in the chemical industry for production of ethylene glycol. Oxygen is required for water and waste water treatment for welding and cutting, as well as an oxidizer.
