When the t-ZrO2 particles are sufficiently small or sufficiently bound by the matrix, the t→m phase transition is hindered during cooling, and t-ZrO2 can be retained to room temperature. Under the action of external stress, a large tensile stress is generated at the front end of the crack, so that the binding force of the matrix to the t-ZrO2 particle is reduced, the t-ZrO2 is destabilized, and the particle changes from a tetragonal phase to a monoclinic phase. The phase transition process is accompanied by a volume expansion of about 5% and a shear strain of 1 to 7%, while generating a compressive strain on the matrix, which retards the crack propagation, so that the main crack propagation requires more energy. That is, under the action of the crack tip stress field, the ZrO2 particles can absorb energy during the martensite transformation, thereby increasing the fracture energy and ultimately improving the fracture toughness of the material. In ceramic materials, some micro-cracks are generated inside the ceramic material due to the existence of residual stress in a partial region. These generated microcracks reduce the elastic modulus of the crack region. Under the external force, the microcracks slowly expand in the subcritical state crack, which can share the strain energy of the main crack tip and improve the total surface generated by the crack propagation area. The energy required to continue the forward propagation of the main crack can suppress the further expansion of the crack and further improve the fracture toughness of the material. The microcrack caused by the volume expansion when the tetragonal phase is transformed into a monoclinic phase can absorb energy during crack propagation and play a role in improving fracture toughness.
