Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) Ceramic is a ceramic material comprising alumina and zirconia. It is a composite ceramic material with zirconia grains in the alumina matrix.

Zirconia-alumina (or zirconia-toughened alumina) is a combination of zirconia and alumina and belongs to the class of composite ceramics known as AZ composites.AZ composites are well known for their mechanical properties and are commonly used in structural applications, cutting tools and many medical applications. In addition, AZ composites offer high strength, fracture toughness, elasticity, hardness and wear resistance. Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) in particular has several key properties.

Structure

Zirconia has robust mechanical properties compared to alumina, which is attributed to the displaced phase transition of the tetragonal zirconia grains that can be deformed when the material is subjected to stress. Stress concentration at the crack tip leads to the transformation of the tetragonal crystal structure to a monoclinic crystal structure, which results in the expansion of the zirconia volume.

A typical specimen of zirconia toughened alumina will contain 10% -20% zirconia. With a 20-30% increase in strength, design criteria can often be met at a lower cost.
