What is a membrane switch?
 
A membrane switch is an electrical switch for turning a circuit on and off. It differs from a mechanical switch, which is usually made of copper and plastic parts: a membrane switch is a circuit printed on PET or ITO. The ink used for screen printing is usually copper / silver / graphite filled and therefore conductive.
The simplest membrane switch consists of 4 layers:

The top graphics panel, a Polyester or Polycarbonate layer with a printed or embossed button pattern
Spacer or dome retainer
PET with printed circuit layer
Adhesive backing with liner
 

Where are membrane switches used?
Some of the most common applications for a membrane switch include manufacturing (control panels), office equipment (computer keyboards), public facilities (fitness equipment, vending machines, gas pumps), medical equipment (examples) and household appliances (microwaves, ranges/ovens, washers/dryers).
