- 2-phase heat transfer involves liquid-vapor phase change (boiling/evaporation and condensation) of working fluid
- While solid conductors such as aluminum, copper, graphite and diamond have thermal conductivity
- Heat is transferred from heat source (evaporator) to heatsink (condenser) over relatively long distances through latent heat of vaporization of working fluid, namely, absorbed by vaporizing working fluid
- Thermal system has 3 major components: vacuum tight, sealed containment shell or vessel, working fluid, capillary wick structure
- They all work together to transfer heat more efficiently and evenly
- Since heat pipe contains vacuum, working fluid will boil and take up latent heat at well below boiling point at atmospheric pressure
