Product Description
As a student in 1925 the renowned Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen won a silver medal for a chair he designed at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, where he was also awestruck by Le Corbusier's Esprit Nouveau pavilion. Jacobsen was one of the first to introduce the principles of Modernism to Danish design, starting with the concept of "total design, " in which no detail was too stereotypical. Right from his early works, what emerges is the influence of Le Corbusier, Asplund and Mies van der Rohe. However, his success as a designer came with his curved and elastic chairs, created in the 1950s and largely influenced by the artistic alliance of Eames-Saarinen during the 1940s. The Royal Hotel in Copenaghen is perhaps his most famous work: Completed in 1960, it was one of the world's first design hotels, a true icon in its genre. Jacobsen personally attended to every minute detail, from the design of the facade to its interiors: From its furnishings, fabrics, chairs, lighting and ashtrays to the tableware and cutlery.
In 1958 the Swan was a technologically innovative chair.
No straight lines - only curves. A moulded shell of synthetic material on an aluminium star swivel base. A layer of cold foam covers the shell, and fabric of leather in a wide range of colours is added.
The Swan, Egg and swan sofa were designed in 1958 for the lobby and lounge areas in the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.
The shell is polyurethane foam with glass fibre reinforcement. The seat carrier consists of a spindle of diameter 28 mm automate steel and an assembly plate of 5 mm steel sheet. The individual parts are welded and surface treated with matt zinc. The base consists of a satin chromed, turnable center part of welded steel tubing (diameter 38 X 2 mm) and a 4-star base in injection moulded aluminium. The leg ferrules are moulded black polyamide.
The Swan comes with leather or fabric upholstery.
The Swan comes with automatic return (model 3329)
The Swan is upholstered with cold cured foam and covered with fabric or leather. Standard fabric for the Swan includes Kvadrat Hallingdal (70% wool and 30% viscose), Tonus (90% wool and 10% nylon), Bass (92% worsted wool and 8% nylon) and Topas (100% pure worsted wool) as well as leather.
